You don't have to be a developer to work at a tech company

So, you work at a tech company but you don’t code? I get asked this question all the time.

Just to give you a bit of background, I’m part of the marketing team at Codeweavers. When I was looking for a new role, I’m talking 5 years ago now, it never occurred to me to look at working at a tech company as I didn’t think there would be a role for me.

I can’t tell you how different it is being a marketer in the tech industry compared to other industries I’ve worked in. The way of working, how you market the company, the product range, the insights... I could keep going, but you get my gist.

But why is it so different?

The way of working at Codeweavers is Agile. Working in an agile environment means we focus on what really matters. Instead of tackling the project as a whole and risking wasting our time and energy taking it in the wrong direction, we divide the project into smaller tasks and make small iterations. This saves so much time! We don’t produce reams of documentation for the sake of it, we do what’s necessary and everyone is trusted to work as best of our abilities.

This might just be a Codeweavers thing, but everyone has the opportunity to continually learn. Across the company people are continually starting new courses, attending conferences and workshops and reading books to improve our skills. We try out new things all the time and learn from our mistakes. It’s pretty cool.

Even better, we work in a casual environment and everyone works together. I come to work in casual clothes and this is the norm here. I honestly believe it makes for a better working environment.

So what other roles are there?

We’ve grown a lot from when I first started at the company 5 years ago. Back then there were 26 of us in the team, consisting of a mix of frontend and backend developers, a couple of client support advisors, a designer, a small operations team and a small infrastructure team.

Now, there are 100 of us, or thereabouts!

There are many more teams and it’s much more structured. I may have missed some of the teams but here are the main ones;

  • Frontend Developers
  • Backend Developers
  • Directors
  • Account Managers
  • Accountants Team
  • QA Team
  • Product Owners
  • Heads of Product and Delivery
  • Marketing Team
  • UI and UX Designers
  • Client Support Advisors
  • Infrastructure Team
  • HR and Office Team

As you can see, there are so many different roles and teams at Codeweavers and we are still recruiting. For example, we are currently building a new insights team that will include data scientists, analysts and mathematicians as we feel we can do even more with the data we have.
